From a basement in Detroit to outfitting the studios that make the records you love. A short history of how we got here, told through the rooms, the gear, and the people.
Vintage King grew alongside the rebirth of analog gear, the rise of the project studio, and the digital console era. Here is the short version of how we got from a basement to a global outfit.
Mike and Andrew Nehra start trading vintage gear out of a Detroit basement. The first deals are placed by phone and faxed list. The customers are working engineers who want gear that already has a story.
The shop expands beyond vintage. New gear arrives — but only the gear engineers ask for. The first studio installations begin, the first Tech Shop opens, and the philosophy locks in: serve engineers like an engineer would.
Vintage King becomes the destination for full studio builds. The audio consultant team grows, the warehouse expands, and the first Hall of Fame inductees get their dedicated pages. The brand stops being just a dealer and becomes an outfitter.
Project studios go pro. Vintage King builds the buyer guides, the trade-in program, and the financing options that put hero gear in home rooms. The Sell or Trade desk takes its place alongside the new gear floor.
Immersive audio, hybrid workflows, and a new generation of engineers reshape the room. Vintage King keeps the same job: serve the engineer behind the gear, whether the room is a basement or a billion-dollar facility.
"Vintage King helped us spec a room that did not need a redo. Twenty-five years of trust earned, one console at a time."
"They sold me my first U47 in 1999. I have bought from them for every record since."
"The Tech Shop is the difference. When the Fairchild needed work, they had the parts and the patience."
Twenty-five years on, the work breaks down to the same three things — sourcing the right gear, installing it cleanly, and standing behind it after the sale.
