TAB / Telefunken V72 and V76 Mic Preamps

The German broadcast preamp standard from the 1950s and 1960s. V72 and V76 modules pulled from German radio facilities became coveted studio outboard — the foundation of the German tube preamp sound and the basis for many modern reproductions.

The Story

Why the V72 / V76 matters.

The V72 and V76 modules were designed for German broadcast radio facilities in the 1950s. TAB and Telefunken built thousands of these tube preamps — V72 with 34 dB of gain for line-level work, V76 with 76 dB of gain for microphones. When German radio facilities modernized in the 1970s and 1980s, the modules flooded the second-hand market and were quickly discovered by recording engineers. Today they form the backbone of the German tube preamp sound, with companies like Wunder Audio, Vintech, and Gyraf building modern reproductions.

All-tube signal path

Both V72 and V76 use German broadcast tubes (EF12, EF804s, EF14). The harmonic richness is what defines the sound.

Broadcast-grade build

Originally built for 24/7 radio operation. The build quality far exceeds typical studio outboard — these modules run for decades without service.

Iron transformers

Input and output transformers from Pikatron and Haufe carry the saturation and weight that defines the German tube sound.

Common questions.

If you do not see your question, talk to a consultant.

Are vintage modules reliable enough for daily use?
After professional restoration — yes. The Tech Shop fully restores V72 and V76 modules, including tube replacement, recapping, and transformer service.
