Neve 1081 Mic Pre / EQ

Neve's all-discrete, four-band parametric mic pre and EQ — the brawnier sibling of the 1073. Built for the 80-series consoles that defined British rock and remained a workhorse in commercial rooms for fifty years.

The Story

Why the Neve 1081 matters.

The Neve 1081 was designed in 1972 by Rupert Neve for the 8048 console. Where the 1073 paired a Marinair-coupled mic pre with a 3-band EQ, the 1081 added a fourth band and shifted to a more flexible parametric architecture. The result was a desk strip that could shape sources with surgical precision while keeping the harmonic warmth Neve was known for. Today the 1081 lives on in horizontal-rack form and as the centerpiece of every restored 8048-series desk.

Class A discrete topology

All-discrete signal path. No op-amps in the audio chain. Same harmonic signature as the original 80-series consoles.

Four-band parametric EQ

High and low shelves plus two fully parametric mid bands. Far more flexible than the 1073's three-band architecture.

Marinair-style transformers

Input and output transformers carry the saturation and weight that defines the Neve sound at the line stage.

The Neve 1081, from the desk that sells the most of them.

Vintage King has placed the Neve 1081 in more rooms than nearly any dealer in the world. Here is what we tell engineers when they call.

Buying decisions get easier when you can hear the difference yourself. Talk to a consultant before you commit.

The 1081 is the EQ I reach for when I need to shape something without losing the source. Four bands of parametric and that Neve weight you cannot fake.

FAQ

Common questions.

If you do not see your question, talk to a consultant.

Is the 1081 better than the 1073?
Different, not better. The 1073 has a 3-band EQ with fixed frequencies and is famous for its mic preamp warmth. The 1081 has a 4-band parametric EQ for more surgical work. Most engineers own both for different jobs.
Which version sounds closest to the original?
AMS Neve's current Classic reissue is built from the original drawings and is the closest to a 1972 unit you can buy new. Vintage modules will vary based on component drift and service history.
Can I run a 1081 module without a Neve console?
Yes — with a power supply and rackmount frame. VK can build or source either, or recommend a 500-series alternative.
Do you service vintage 1081s?
Yes. The Tech Shop services and restores Neve modules end to end, including transformer replacement and recapping.
